Timber Marking

Timber Marking

Timber marking is generally one of the phases of a timber sale, however, some landowners and consultants may conduct the sale on their own and need assistance with the marking phase. Boundaries, SMZs, “cut” trees, or “leave” trees may be marked depending on the customer and specifications of the sale.

Timber marking at Acorn is conducted by a forester and/or forest technician.  The foresters take direction from the landowner or consultant on the specs of the job, along with their expertise and experience to determine which trees should be harvested and which trees should remain.  Trees are usually marked with a special timber marking paint at two places on the tree – one as high as the forester can mark so it’s easily visible by the logger, and a second at the base of the tree to ensure the correct trees were harvested.  Boundaries are marked in the same manner, but in a separate color using a single high mark.  Boundaries and “leave” trees may also be marked with colored flagging.
