Timber Marking

1. what is timber marking?

Timber marking is a key phase in the timber sale process—where foresters clearly identify which trees to cut and which to leave. At Acorn, experienced foresters or technicians work directly with landowner specifications and forester judgment to determine marking criteria.

2. how is the marking done?

Trees are typically marked using tree-marking paint in two spots: one high enough on the trunk to be visible to logging crews, and another at the base so harvest accuracy can be verified afterward. Boundaries, Streamside Management Zones (SMZs), and “leave” trees may be marked using different colors or flagging to ensure clarity and compliance.

3. why timber marking matters:

Timber marking helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that harvesting aligns precisely with your management goals and contract specifications. It’s a communication tool that prevents accidental removal of valuable trees and protects sensitive areas.
